3 Steps Towards Writing Your First Book

When I first began writing, it was in middle school. I would write short stories or start writing ideas in hopes they would become books but I lacked follow through. I guess that's what happens to a creatively-distracted 12 year old girl.

In 2012, when I completed my first paperback book The Palace Keepers, I could hardly believe it. I actually followed through and finished writing a book! All of those handwritten scrap papers and binders filled with notes for the past four years were now nicely typed, edited and published in a real, tangible, legit book. Wow. Not only was it a confidence booster but it really taught me a lot about what writing really is and not what I thought it was.

Before you even start the first page, I wanted to share three steps to help you towards writing your book. There are a lot of false mindsets about writing that I had to break down and power through. I hope you can start off on a better foot and clear your mind of some clutter. Regardless of the genre or style, these tips can help your mind prepare for what is to come.

STEP #1: Pray.

You might not be a Christian writer like I am, but in this step take a moment to reflect on what you want to write and why you want to write it. Start a prayer or devotion journal for writing. Before you write, sit down and journal your thoughts and feelings. Meditate, find peace and invite patience into your space. For me, I ask God to direct my thoughts and words. When you take time before you write to get centered, you are more likely to create something you are proud of.

STEP #2: Plan.

I am a big advocate of writing without planning and it gets me into so much trouble. Schedule a time every day, usually the same time, strictly for working on your book. Not blog posts, not articles. Take time to map out your book summary, characters, chapters, layout, author voice etc. Focus on the bigger picture of what you want your book to sound like, feel like, be like. Think of your target audience and ask yourself some questions: What can I say to inspire them? How do I want the reader to feel when they finish my book? Then answer those questions. Keep them close by throughout the entire book writing process.

STEP #3: Push.

Even before you start the first word, distractions will call your name. Phone notifications will beep, emails will sing and neighbors will knock. That is life. Those can wait (unless your neighbor has an emergency, then send them next door to the other neighbor. Just kidding. Maybe.) Remember your scheduled writing time and stick to it. If you are having writer's block, take a minute to pray, review your plan and push through. Through the darkness, through the cobwebs and through the mess you call your mind. Sometimes it is good to take a break but don't use it as an excuse to slack.
Keep in mind: your dream is to become an author and write a book.

No one is going to write it for you, and quite honestly, no one can write it but you.

No One Will Ever Love You {a devotional project}

As a young love-sick adolescent, I've often had the thought that no one would ever love me. Have you? Today I can say that my husband loves me, my son loves me and my family loves me. Not because of what I do but because of who I am. They can feel safe in my love and I in theirs. Yet bigger than our love on earth, there is a love that is incomparable...

My latest book project is a devotional about love. True Agape love! With this devotional, I want to break the chains that hold our hearts captive. With each word and each paragraph, I want every heart to understand the true meaning of love and who really adores them. In this world, love is used too often and not in the right way. What is actually lust is confused as love and hearts fall victim daily.
The truth is, no one will ever love you...the way Jesus does!

 the first cover concept

This devotional isn't formatted as a timeframe-type book, like "30 day challenge" or "21 days of love". It is divided into sections and mini-sections to help the mind and heart focus more on the content.
Your funding will help self-publish this devotional through Morris Publishing. This company is amazing and helped incredibly when I published my first book, The Palace Keepers, which was majorly successful and has sold over 110 copies since it's launch in April of last year. For this campaign, the money contributed will go towards an ISBN number, book editing, full color cover and the first book order.
This devotional is so important in a society that paints an untrue picture of what love is. Women everywhere, teenagers and adults alike, struggle every day as they fall into the lies of the enemy. Hope is fading fast and souls need this devotional to inspire them, uplift them, show them who The Lord Jesus Christ really is and what He thinks of them.

Help me by spreading the word about this project. Use the share tools attached to this campaign and join me as bonds are broken, hearts are set free and love (real Godly love) is sent into all the world.

New Poetry E-Book Launch!

On Monday June 10th, my personal poetry project {say that 10 times fast} will be available for purchase and download in the shop!

"Conversion of a Heart" showcases personal and deep poetry from artist/author Jacy Lee Pulford. Extracted from her journal as a young convert, the poetry tells an emotional story of what goes through someone's mind and heart when they have to give up all that they've ever known, for a God who has called them. Using original photography to create beautiful imagery to complement each poem, this is sure to be a delightful and inspiring read.

This 31-page collection of poetry is from my journal as I first came to the Lord. Each poem is a piece of my testimony puzzle and sheds an emotional, artistic light into the mind and heart of a new convert. I hope and pray that this book will touch the hearts of those who feel lost, broken, alone, scared and yet hopeful. We are all a work in progress and each journey is different. This is my story, through poems.

I'd love to hear your honest thoughts. Feel free to email any reviews to jacy@artbyjacy.com

Hurry Spring! {Giveaway & Printable}

Seriously, what the junk. Woke up to a cold blanket of nasty white stuff, which made me feel awful. Not like I was going anywhere {SAHM's say what!} but I could have sworn my spring-spidey sense was tingling this week. Guess I was wrong.

What DID make me happy was remembering that I was going to shower you beauties with freebies, woot!! I love giving stuff away, mainly because it feels good. Not just to unload stuff, uh, I mean treasures. I also do love creating fun things, it's just sometimes I have no need for them at home. So maybe you do.

I was thinking how dull my living room has been. I will be sharing photos soon, but hopefully in a "before" setting as I am brainstorming a major revamp. The colors are so dark! Reds, browns, greens...which I love, don't get me wrong. I heart all colors, I ain't prejudice. But I've been dealing with that same color palette for about 6 years, since I was single in my own apartment! Lame, I know.

Enter this bright, fun printable I made:

Man, it just does something happy in my soul :)
I smile every time I look at it! And THAT is what my living room is missing. Colors that make me smile. Of course, I am partial to this scripture. It was one that was shown to me the spring that I was preggo with David. I was going through a lot of emotions, mostly fear. My new book was about to be published and I guess I was super nervous about the entire thing. Excited yet nervous. Oh yeah, and being a new mommy was freaking me out a little. Excited yet freaked.

I was at a conference and this verse was the theme. It couldn't have been more perfect! That year I had two births: one spiritual and one physical. And on the same month, April! Monday I received my first shipment of freshly published books and literally that Friday, David came. It was a great year.

Needless to say, spring is super close to my heart. I'm reminded of all of the joy and the promises God fulfilled in my life.
I hope this printable will bring you some smiles too :)
{The print is 8x10 inches. Right click and save to your computer}

As I'm gearing for this new season, I wanted to be more creative this year. I know, I'm already awesome, but you can't stop there. I want to be totally awesome! {nerd alert}

So I whipped up these little babies for one lucky winner:

I can't take credit for blowing the glass or making the porcelain BUT I did decorate it all pretty like :)
We don't drink alcohol but we do love making smoothies and slushies when the weather gets warm, and using nice glasses with straws. These spring-inspired polka dot glasses would look so cute with something sweet and yummy inside!

Oh and I LOVE green tea. So I just had to add a matching tea spoon rest, which is funny considering it doesn't even really go with the glasses...one is meant for hot and the other cold. However, you can always use the rest for any spoons...like a serving spoon when hosting or salad tongs. Either way, be super careful with washing, no abrasive materials and no dishwashing. Yes, you do have my permission to swoon and have googly eyes. Just take it easy and don't hurt yourself.

The giveaway will run until next Tuesday. It's super easy to enter and there are a few ways you can earn extra entries. Enter below using the Rafflecopter widget. Good luck, beauties. Hurry spring, we need you nowwwww...!

I am sure in the future I will be back. But I have to say, I am excited about this new journey! I mean I just look back at the last couple of years and all the things I've learned. God is truly remarkable and I have no doubt that this avenue I'm about to walk on will lead to even greater knowledge!

This more than likely will be my last post. I will be working more on my upcoming books (anyone love a good Christian love story? what about some advice from an accomplished author?) and on my online art shop {do you see that awesome painting above?? It's my latest, "Say Cheese." You can pre-order your print here and get 20% off!}

I will still be advertising on awesome blogs and will still have my Google account to follow my favs. Blogging will always be a part of me, it's just I really don't have time to keep up with my own one...

So before I say goodbye, I wanted you to please take a minute to sign up for my art + ministry newsletter! It won't be spammy, promise, just about one email a month to update you on what is new in my shop and any news I need to share. You guys have been amazing, to say the least. I adore each one of you and appreciate your dedication to this blog. You are all more like friends and I know this isn't a final goodbye...more like a "see ya next time!"
So, smile for the camera and say cheese...because you look lovely today :)
May the Lord bless you and your family in 2013!

I will leave you with some words I'd like you to remember in this new year:

God is always Sovereign, no matter what you or I think.
Follow Him and you will never be confused!
Obey the Word, it is the final say.
Love each other more than life itself.
Surround yourself with positive people; and pray for the negative ones.
Look up, not down; aim high, not low.
In all things, honor your Father which watches all you say & do.
Be a blessing and be blessed.
Be pure in heart and you shall see the Lord.
Smile often. It scares people.
Laugh at the little things, it will make you wiser.
When you feel alone, remember Christ was alone on the cross to bear your sorrow!
His blood covers ALL sin; not just the ones you want to give up.
Have faith by having a relationship.
BE A LIGHT ON A HILL!!
Spend more time with family than with social media.
Give your home more love than strangers. You will be held accountable.
Watch your words, they cut deeper than the sharpest swords.
Be humble like a child; let them be your teacher and you the student.
Grow from mistakes, but not grow bitter.
Forgive early, find peace early.
and finally...
BLOG WHAT YOU LOVE NOT WHAT YOU THINK OTHERS WILL LOVE!!

XOXO
~JACY~

That feeling...{Weekend Recap}

Phew, another weekend bites the dust.
Is it just me or are these things flying by faster?
This past Saturday was pretty fun.
I had a booth at our public library in Enfield CT for local authors. The fair was a Children/Teen/Youth event and it was so cool to meet other authors, speak to parents and young kids about my book, The Palace Keepers and the purity of the heart. Here is what my booth looked like:

There was one woman who approached my table and I felt that tug from God in my heart. You know that feeling. The feeling you get when you are behind someone in need at the supermarket and you feel this urge to pay for them, or that voice that tells you to pray/call/text someone out of the blue because you feel God wants them to know He knows where they are and is with them. Yeah...that feeling...

So she reads the back of The Palace Keepers and I start to tell her what it is about.
Her eyes lite up and though I sense some hesitation, she admitted that she needed to read this book, that she was going through relationship stuff at that moment. Wow, God is good!

This small little local fair made me realize what it's all about...reaching people!
Get out there, get connected and meet the need. I'm so blessed to have met some great people and I did learn some neat things.

What did you do this weekend? Did you connect with others?

Answered Prayer and a Giveaway

I am so excited, I cannot even contain myself as I write this post!!

Many, if not all, of you know that I have written a book called "The Palace Keepers: Protecting the Purity of the Heart." In a nutshell, the book is non-fiction and I share my testimony on how God plucked me out of a relationship that was saturated with sin, guilt and shame and placed me into His marvelous hands.
I also talk about the lessons Jesus taught me through my journey towards salvation; mainly emotional purity, the foundation of the book.

Jesus showed me that in order to be pure physically, we must first be pure in our hearts. To do that, He has called us to be our Palace Keepers, protecting every inch of our palaces. This includes our minds (the Gate), our thoughts (the Courtyard), our decisions (the Foyer), our hearts (the Throne Room) and our bodies (the Grounds). It is our job, not only to watch what goes in and out of our palaces, but to place King Jesus firmly on the throne, in the Throne Room of our hearts, that He may lead us and give us guidance as we do our jobs.

God has been amazing and wonderful! My first run of books have almost sold out, in less than a year! Wow that blows my mind as a new author. Remember when I shared my adventures in this post? Seems like forever ago.

Well, the Lord has made a way for me to order more books and they are almost here! I sent in my re-order form last week for 100 books. Normally, it takes at least 20 business days for the books to print, then another 5 or so for shipping. Well I have a conference I'm attending next weekend so I prayed in faith that God will somehow make a way...and did He ever!
Not only were the books printed in 7 days, they were shipped as well! They are scheduled to arrive this Tues...that is less than 2 weeks from when I sent the form and exactly 3 days from the conference!! Praise God!

I am giving you all a chance to pre-order your copy online now, so you can receive your book as soon as possible. All pre-orders will receive a free bookmark. As a special Christmas promotion (it's not that far away, ahhh) starting now until the end of the year, if you buy more than one book, shipping is free! I will also be doing special gifting, so if you would like that second book shipped to a different address for the holidays, let me know in the message to seller their name and address, and I will wrap it up nice with fancy paper and a note, and ship it for you! Pretty sweet huh?

Also, I thought it would be cool to give one lucky winner a free E-book edition of "The Palace Keepers" below! This is compatible with any PC or tablet device. The giveaway will go through the weekend and end on Monday, the 15th at 12am. Thank you all for your support and love! I'm so blessed by everyone and I want to give back. May the Lord guide you today & always xoxo

The Palace Keepers {My Book Highlighted}

Some of you awesome peeps may have noticed the last couple of Sunday devotionals I've posted have been excerpts from my new book, The Palace Keepers. While thinking about a Monday blog post, it came to my mind that this past weekend, I received a phone call from a local pastor's wife. She had just finished reading the book and wanted me to come next month to speak to the ladies at her church...I cannot tell you the perfect timing for this phone call.

Lately, my heart has been really heavy. Like super-duper loaded. Spiritually I feel like I'm just getting by; almost like my head is completely below the water but I'm trying to breath through a straw...does that makes sense? Anyway, when I hung up the phone after she called, I felt so joyful (at least for a moment lol) It was as if Jesus was letting me know that even though I was going through tough times, He still has a calling on my life and a purpose to fulfill. Thank the Lord!

As I prepare to minister, I want to share with you a little about my book, since that's what has been on my mind:
The Palace Keepers are people who protect the purity of their hearts by, not just protecting only their heart, but their entire palace. Our palaces consist of our minds, thoughts, decisions, heart and body.  It is through the process of purifying our entire palace that we can preserve the pure and cleanliness of our heart.
God showed me that the modern Christian society has focused so much on the physical, that we are losing the basic fact that we need to watch our emotions. We cannot protect the body first and the heart second, that's a backwards system!

With The Palace Keepers book, you will learn through Bible scriptures, Bible & real life stories, thought provoking questions and insights that King Jesus is waiting for us to put Him in the Throne Room of our heart. He has called us to be our own Palace Keepers and we cannot give that job away! If we do, that means we allow other people to control our emotions and ultimately our hearts...and that can do SO much damage!

So take a moment today to pray and ask the Lord to reveal the emotional state of your heart. Have you been a good Palace Keeper or have you given that job away and need to reclaim it?
The book is available on Amazon/Kindle, which is compatible with any tablet or pc. Also in classic paperback form through my ministry website.

I'm not pushing this book for the money. There is a message that needs to be addressed and it is my job, my calling, to get it out! The purity if our hearts is so important and this book will help each of us in the process.

Have you ever heard of emotional purity?
Do you feel like you can relate to a book like this?
Would love to hear your thoughts! Comment below, please :)
xoxo
